The Advanced Biofuels Association

Who We Are

The Advanced Biofuels Association (ABFA) represents the leading edge of innovative and green technologies through the producers of renewable advanced biofuels and the providers of renewable biomass feedstock. Our member companies can deliver the innovative technologies that will help America achieve our energy and economic security.

These second generation technologies are positioned to produce renewable oils, gasolines or gasoline components, diesels or jet fuels.  Many of the finished products will be hydrocarbon-based molecules and could be used in today's car, trucks, buses, planes, boats and trains.  These new fuels would be consumer ready and not require separate pumps, new flex fuel cars, separate tanks or pipelines.  Many of the second generation fuels would also provide more miles to the gallon for consumers.

Our member companies hold the promise to the solutions that will drive our new economy by representing a range of innovative technologies that can manufacture renewable fuels from a diverse selection of feedstocks.  These technologies could produce significant volumes of renewable fuels that will provide sustainable qualities beyond those of first generation fuels including the reduction of their Greenhouse gas footprints.

The ABFA, and its member companies are engaging federal and state lawmakers to ensure technology and feedstock neutrality and sustainability, as well as tax credit and incentive parity.  Our member companies and their advanced technologies provide opportunities to develop and commercially deploy significant quantities of renewable and lower carbon fuels that will move our nation closer to achieving our energy and economic security.

What We Do

The Advanced Biofuels Association engages the federal and state governments at all levels to secure a level playing field for innovative technologies as earlier policies have focused on the first generation renewable fuels of ethanol and biodiesel.

The ABFA is proud to represent its member companies before key federal and state policy makers as their technologies represent our nation’s future.  Our members are proof that American ingenuity and entrepreneurship will prove to be the real winners in a Green economy.

Widely acknowledged and respected for its expertise and input on a range of policy issues by both federal and state lawmakers, the ABFA also identifies and educates key stakeholder groups engaged in the biofuels policy debate.

Through the ingenuity and promise of our members’ technologies, the ABFA serves as the voice of the advanced biofuels industry as it educates lawmakers while helping to strengthen public policies.

Major Accomplishments of the ABC

  • Modified technical definition in energy policy legislation that ensured technology neutral processes are part of the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) Program.
  • Expanded the biomass-based diesel provisions within the RFS program to allow technology neutral framework that broadens its application to other distillate products like jet fuel and heating oil.
  • Largely achieved harmonization of the biofuels tax code definitions for renewable biomass-based diesel fuels with those set in the RFS and on parity with those for Biodiesel.
  • Supported the effort to secure the $1.01 gallon production tax credit for Cellulosic-based biofuels.  Was a leader to change the credit from Cellulosic ethanol to cellulosic biofuels.
  • Provided clarifying language for legislation prohibiting "splash and dash" practices for biodiesel exports.
