Strategy

Neste Oil’s strategy is aimed to make the company the world's leading premium-quality renewable diesel producer. Oil refining will remain as Neste Oil's central business, however, and the company will continue to invest in new conversion capacity at its current refineries.

The foundation of Neste Oil's strategy will remain based on the company's ability to use its unique refining know-how to produce high-quality fuels for cleaner traffic from a variety of lower-cost raw materials. Neste Oil expects to invest several billion euros in growth projects over the next 10 years.

The role of Neste Oil's different businesses
Neste Oil’s updated strategy highlights the importance of renewable diesel and oil refining for generating growth for the company. In addition to these core businesses, promising growth opportunities can be seen in high-quality gasoline and lubricant components, most of which are based on in-house expertise. Neste Oil is already the leader on the European merchant market for top-tier lubricant base oils.

The company also has two divisions that play a supporting role for its core businesses. Shipping handles Neste Oil’s raw material input and product shipments and Oil Retail is responsible for fuel marketing and sales through channels such as Neste stations. Neste Oil is also the majority owner in Neste Jacobs, an engineering services provider, which gives Neste Oil a valuable competitive edge in implementing growth projects. This is particularly critical on today's markets because of the global shortage of quality engineering services.

Renewable Fuels – Driving Neste Oil's Growth Strategy

  • Neste Oil’s NExBTL renewable diesel is a high-quality product with an excellent environmental profile
  • Renewable raw materials: vegetable oil and animal fat
  • Responds to the growing demand for biofuels in Europe
  • Based on Neste Oil’s forerunner production technology (NExBTL)
  • Two production plants are being built at the Porvoo refinery
    • The first plant was completed in summer 2007 with an annual capacity of 170,000 tons
    • The second plant will be completed in 2009 with an annual capacity of 170,000 tons
  • 800 000 t/a plants in Singapore and Rotterdam
    • Singapore facility is due to be completed by the end of 2010
    • Rotterdam facility is due to be completed in 2011

Sustainability principles for biofuels

Principles for feedstock:

  • We are familiar with the life cycle and the origin of our feedstocks.
  • We select our suppliers carefully with emphasis on the HSE and social performance of the supplier.
  • We require our suppliers to share the aim of sustainability in operations, with explicit clauses/terms to this effect in mutual agreements.
  • We carry out supplier audits or otherwise screen the performance of the supply chain, and work together with suppliers to improve their performance.

Principles for processing and manufacture:

  • We operate highly efficient production processes, which comply with the requirements of ISO and OHSAS environmental, health and safety, and quality standards.
  • We continually improve the safety performance of production.
  • We develop our production processes to be able to utilise new raw materials.

Principles for end products:

  • We develop and market high-quality products that help to reduce harmful emissions without limitations to existing engines.
  • We aim to continuously improve the greenhouse gas balance and the energy balance of the whole product chain in order to diminish the impacts on the environment.
  • We offer our customers products and our partners technologies that comply with current and future regulations.

Research and development

Neste Oil is also putting emphasis into development of new energy crops or alternative feedstocks. The company considers future potential to exist among energy crops that are non-edible and therefore do not compete with food production. Also, as a natural continuation to its vision "The leading provider of cleaner traffic fuels", Neste Oil is investing into the development of the 3nd generation biofuel technology using gasification of biomass and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.

NExBTL diesel

Neste Oil has developed a renewable diesel component NExBTL utilizing a proprietary conversion process for vegetable oils and animal fats. NExBTL Renewable diesel properties are similar to the best existing diesels such as GTL or Swedish Environmental Class 1 fuels. NExBTL is sulfur-, oxygen-, nitrogen- and aromatic free and has very high cetane number. Product meets the requirements set by EN590 and WWFC category 4 except for density.

Cold properties (cloud point) of NExBTL can be adjusted in the production from -5 ... -30 ºC to meet the needs of various climatic conditions. Heating value is similar to the EN590 hydrocarbon fuel, storage stability is good and water solubility low. NExBTL diesel is compatible with the existing vehicle fleet as well as diesel fuel logistic system and is technically easy to blend in conventional diesels in all rations.

NExBTL in diesel blends decrease both regulated and unregulated exhaust emission components. Decrease in emissions is dependent on the proportion of NExBTL. NExBTL blends do not have an impact of fuel consumption. (Source: NExBTL - Biodiesel fuel of the second generation; Copyright 2005 SAE International: 2005-01-3771)
